GeoArches investigates how communities turn environmental variability into livelihoods, infrastructure, institutions, and shared practices. It also asks how those arrangements change when rivers, tides, coastlines, or political conditions move.
The central inquiry
From environmental rhythm to social form.
Water is variable, but variability is not the same as disorder. Tides, floods, channel shifts, seasonal inundation, and sediment movement can be anticipated, exploited, buffered, or ignored.
GeoArches asks how communities learned those rhythms and translated them into productive landscapes. The material record of that translation may appear as a field boundary, canal, dike, settlement location, soil horizon, pollen assemblage, legal rule, ritual practice, or knowledge tied to place. None is sufficient alone. Together, they reveal how environmental knowledge became organized and how organization redistributed risk and opportunity.
The research therefore moves across timescales. A flood can transform a city in hours. A channel can migrate over decades. A coastline can reorganize a region over centuries. Inherited infrastructure can shape ecological and political choices long after its original purpose disappears.

Comparative method
Comparison is a discipline of attention.
The Lowcountry and southern Mesopotamia are not analogues. Their juxtaposition forces the research to identify mechanisms rather than similarities.
- Which hydrological processes are comparable, and which are specific to place?
- How do coercion, inequality, property, and governance alter the meaning of “adaptation”?
- When does infrastructure buffer variability, and when does it lock communities into new vulnerabilities?
- How can long-term evidence inform present choices without turning history into prescription?
Evidence and method
No single archive contains the whole landscape.
GeoArches combines field observation, sediment records, archaeological context, remote sensing, chronometric dating, historical documents, ecological measurement, and community knowledge. The methodological sequence matters: research questions determine sampling, and sampling determines which claims the evidence can support.
Methods are therefore presented on this site as parts of an argument rather than as a catalogue of equipment. A core is valuable because of where it sits in a landscape and what process it can resolve. A map is valuable because its scale, date, and uncertainty are explicit. A historical source is valuable because its silences and institutional purposes are interpreted alongside its content.
